Danielle Venables

Have you ever been told to stop treating your business like a hobby and felt a pang of resistance? I'm Danielle Venables, your Akashic guide and soul coach, and I'm peeling back the layers on why this well-worn piece of advice doesn't quite sit right with me. In the bustling streets of the entrepreneurial world, we often get caught in the current of profit over passion, but I'm here to hoist the sail in a different direction. This conversation is a candid exploration of finding joy and integrity within your business ventures, as I weave personal anecdotes with energetic perspectives to highlight the importance of infusing love and enthusiasm into what we do.

Without a guest to share the spotlight, this episode stands as a testament to the power of aligning business practices with personal values and passions. It's a journey through the traditional 'business-like' approach and why it might not be the golden ticket for every heart-centered, service-based entrepreneur. I'm shining a light on the path to calling in the right clients and sustaining entrepreneurial spirit by sharing stories from my own experience and dissecting the conventional wisdom. So if you're ready to embrace your business with the same vigor as your favorite pastime, tune in and let's elevate the conversation around passion-driven work.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Return to Radiance podcast.

Speaker 1:

Today I wanted to talk about something that I have heard in the industry, in the online business space, for at least the four years that I've been around it probably goes back even farther than that and that is the phrase stop treating your business like a hobby. And while I understand my son is waking up, of course, while I understand the premise or the idea behind this statement in terms of there are certain obligations that we need to fulfill as business owners, such as providing the service, such as dedicating some time to it and all of those things. It really doesn't sit well with me and what I've realized is from personal experience. It also kind of made me fall out of love with my business. It also kind of made me fall out of love with my business, and I know that I can't be alone in that, because what we're doing from a psychological and energetic point of view, when we are saying don't treat your business like a hobby, is we are saying treat it like a business, treat it like a job. Well, how many of us were in nine to five jobs and dreaded getting up every Monday morning and going to work? Even if you loved your job, there was probably a little bit of resistance. That is why you're an entrepreneur now, and when we talk about treating your business like a business, of course there are certain executive decisions that need to be made. When you're thinking about investing, maybe there's a consideration on what is the return on this investment? Is it worth it? Is it the right time? Does it make business sense? Of course, there are always going to be those aspects.

Speaker 1:

But to generalize is still harmful because, at the end of the day, treating your business like a business in today's world means treating it like a means to make money and yes, a business is a means to make money, so bear with me here. But when we set out as heart centered, soul led entrepreneurs, when we set out to treat our business like a business to make money, when that is our objective, yeah, we're missing the point there. There's a little bit of a disconnect there between sharing our soul gifts with the world and being excited and being in love with what we're doing and seeking to make money. Sometimes those two decisions will be in conflict. In fact, most of the time those two decisions will be in conflict with one another, because we're all intelligent, capable humans who know that this path here might be the one that will make me the most money. But will it also make me the most fulfilled? Will it make me the most happy? Is it the most in integrity, are critical for overall fulfillment. Sustainability and also when, especially when you're in a service-based business, calling in the right clients, there's an energetic signature to doing something to make money versus doing it out of service and receiving money for it. So treating your business like a business isn't always the best advice, honestly.

Speaker 1:

So now let's dive into the topic of hobbies. You do a hobby because you love it. You do it because it fuels you, it nourishes you, it brings you some sort of joy and fulfillment. Otherwise you wouldn't do it, it wouldn't be a hobby. So when we can fall back in love with our business and maybe start to treat it like a hobby, start to treat it like our favorite hobby, start to treat it like something we could do all day for hours on end, that we can hyper fixate on without burning out all of these things, we bring more enjoyment into our business and that becomes magnetic, bringing in more clients, bringing in the right clients, operating in integrity, because we're not worried about what's going to make the money, we're just worried about what feels best, what feels most creative, what feels most in flow, and that bigger picture actually builds something better.

Speaker 1:

Now, if you're not the type of person who prioritizes your hobbies, this may be a little bit of an issue. But with a little bit of intention, with a little bit of work, it's one of those things where you can commit to your hobby every day, you can commit to honing your gifts every day. You can commit to showing up in service every day as a hobby instead of as a job, as a business. So I'm going to wrap this one up and keep it super short. I'm sure you catch my drift, but I just had some family walk in the door as well as a baby waking up, so I'm going to go.
